Actually, it was difficult for me to decide whether to rate this really good book as a 4 or as 5. I will explain below. Basically it depends on why you read it and what you expect to get out of it. Steve Wells, the author, has done a wonderful job explaining how our beliefs and values are tied to emotions, how they affect our success and happiness and what to do to dispose emotional limitations using SET, his own version of "energy tapping" techniques (a family of psychological intervention techniques with its most popular members being TFT and EFT). There is also an excellent chapter on goal setting and achievement. The man clearly knows what he is talking about and suggests specific ways for the reader to change and succeed. He also demonstrates this in action.I liked many, many things I've read in this book: The real stories from his workshops, the description of how a belief is formed by our experiences, the need to confront the negative and treat it so it doesn't affect us emotionally (instead of ignoring it or avoiding it by focusing on the positive), the work on values, many tips that can help the reader understand or go forward, etc.I do not agree 100% with all of the author's views and ideas, I would say I agree only 98% :) Since I am a professional practitioner and teacher of EFT (which has common ground with SET), I see many elements of good practice here, useful also to practitioners of other tapping methods. My main objection is on the frequent use of tapping on general statements which does work to calm down negative emotional responses, but my experience says that many times this is only temporary if you don't go to the specific aspects, mostly events, from personal history or imagination of the future. Well, the author does refer to the need to discover and treat aspects some times, but the book is missing some good examples on detailed work on aspects.The book clearly deserves a five as a source of information and ideas on how to overcome emotional barriers to setting and achieving goals and aligning personal values. It's really excellent. However, on the practical side, for those who want to apply the techniques described, there are some important things missing, such as: the subjective measurement of feeling (such as the SUDS scale) and of the "power" of a thought or idea (such as the VOC scale), tips on how to proceed top-down and sideways to specific events, more clear general instructions for anyone to follow (instead of relying on the reader's ability to extract such information from the cases described), maybe a couple of others as well. Since the author states at page 2 that his aim is to show the reader how to use these techniques and guide the reader to applying them, the book falls short on that. This is kind of natural, since a book cannot replace a good seminar or a workshop, at least not if someone needs to do some serious work on himself.So if you expect to be able to apply the techniques on your own solely by using this book and with no other information or previous experience on energy tapping techniques, you may not be able to do so. However, if you want to understand why tapping to release emotional barriers is a valuable tool for belief work, if you want to get a good idea of how SET is applied, or if you'd like to get some really good insights into how emotional barriers related to beliefs and values affect us and how they can be disposed without using the logical brain and cognitive techniques, then the book is very, very good. I would suggest to everyone who is seriously into energy tapping techniques, whether for self improvement or as a professional practice, to get this book, read it and use the information. For those readers who are looking for means to change and succeed, this book is valuable but they will need more information or, better, go to a workshop.
