Their stories are all the more revealing because they come to history at an oblique angle. Strikingly packaged and attractively priced, these books combine dynamic writing, compelling subjects, and editorial excellence. With the spirit of an adventuress and the heart of a shopkeeper, Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury set out to leave her mark on 16"th"-century England. A quick and brief read this may be, yet within it's ninety five pages is a very clear and concise biography of Elizabeth Countess of Shrewsbury, otherwise more popularly known as Bess of Hardwick.Appropriately published by Short Books Ltd, Kate Hubbard has crammed Elizabeth Hardwick's long life, four marriages, eight children, rapacious land acquisitions and very extensive house building projects, her rather expensive lodger, Mary Queen of Scots as well as her troubling grand-daughter Arbella Stuart. All for £4.99p, it doth pleaseth me well.
