Seduced by the blurb, turned off by the excerpt but curious masochist that I was, I had to inflict this work on myself. I'll admit, I was also tempted to read it just to write the review with the expectation that I most likely would not enjoy it. Nevertheless, I read "In the Dark" with a half-hearted hope that perhaps I might like it regardless of the writing style that made me wince as I read the excerpt. I was disappointed. It seemed as if the author attempted to meld some philosophy with erotic fiction. It was a good idea but the execution failed. The author could have imbued his work with philosophy, adding more depth to "In the Dark", as Kitty Thomas did with psychology in Comfort Food. The psychology in Comfort Food thrilled and fascinated me. The philosophy in "In the Dark" did not. The only thing philosophical about it was Duncan occasionally mentally rambling about reality during his imprisonment. Let me put it another way. Kitty Thomas showed, Jack Brighton told. As for the kidnapper's parting remarks, (view spoiler)[was I supposed to get the sense that perhaps this whole event did not happen? (hide spoiler)] That would have been a really interesting way to end it didn't work because the whole work failed to persuade me that it had anything to do with philosphy. (See above about show versus tell.)The writing was painfully inelegant. The dialogue was cheesy. And then there was the abuse of exclamation marks and CAPS LOCK! This story could have used a good editor. I mean, what was this?'He's going to do it anyway. He said that as well - I'm going to fuck you tonight - and I'm going to make you come harder than you've ever come inside a cunt. He's taken you to such highs already. Why not give it a go?'"NOOOO! STOP THIS! STOP TORMENTING ME! WHO'S SIDE ARE YOU ON!"Poor Duncan; he was slipping away, losing the plot. His mind was all over the place. One moment afraid then another looking forward to the moment the man would return and ask if Duncan was ready to be shagged - not just ready; but hungry and eager for a good fucking. And the time dragged by... It really dragged. It was so incredibly cruel. Speaking of which, do 19-year-old British men really talk like the way Duncan did? Do they really use the word tormenting? I'm an American so I wonder. I also did not think it very believable that Duncan gave in too quickly to his kidnapper's demands. Maybe it was because the story and Dan failed to draw me in, thus allowing me to read impassively and disconnectedly. I had no emotional connection with Duncan so I could not feel Dan's fear, his lust, and his confusion. The author also failed to persuade me that sensory deprivation and isolation made Duncan desperate enough to beg his kidnapper to rape him. Or maybe it was because of lines like these:"Would you like me to shave all that ball fuzz off, Duncan?""In the dark?" he replied. "No! Put a light on if you're going to do it.""Sorry - no can do. The dark heightens the senses - it sharpens the pleasure...and the pain.""Then blindfold me!"What did work was the sex, which was pretty intense. If the moral of the story was "Nothing is simple, and no man is totally straight – not when the dark strips everything away and only physicality remains", well, that worked too - sort of. I just wish that the execution had been better. PS: The cover is titillating but embarrassing so I'll be deleting this from my Kindle for PC to avoid accidental exposure.

2019-05-21 16:03 I read this since my gurl Cat recommended it to me(i know it was a joke)! But look at the cover..I just had to! Although I did enjoy it was a little disturbing in the begining. (view spoiler)[Like when Duncan's unknown "kidnapper" makes him deep throat him! That was a little too much! Eventhough the kidnapper told him that the only way he will pleasure him was if he begged was consensual sex but come on!! Its dark...and the kidnapper is touching on him and he's getting horny so obviously they get down to it but I still had a problem with him forcing his dick down Duncan's throat and gaging him with it...then the kidnapper deep throats him(no choking) and says he will continue only if he does him to. So what do you think Duncan does??? Of course he sucks him off too! After all of that Duncan finally begs his captor to fuck him and he has the best sexual experience of his life....THE END!! (hide spoiler)] I would have gave it a better rating if it wasn't for the "deep throat" debacle...cuz after that the sex was hot! But I just couldn't get over it!!

In broad strokes, this is a pretty disturbing story, effectively involving kidnap and rape. You'll need to be able to get past that to read this novella - hey, it's fiction, right? We never learn the name of the kidnapper. The kidnapped is Duncan, a 19 year old straight-identified young man. Personally, I don't really get the fixation some of my gay brothers have for straight guys. I have hard enough a time getting a second look from gay guys, I don't need the added rejection of pursuing straights. Not to mention that it feeds homophobic fears about trying to 'convert' people.Anyhoo, the whole story recounts one night in a pitch black room where a restrained Duncan is alternatively coerced with pain and seduced with sexual stimulation until he begs to be penetrated. It's all recounted in great detail, as Duncan slowly convinces himself to give in to the pleasure the kidnapper gives him. Once you get past the improbability of the setup - how did the kidnapper manage to get into Duncan's room and transport him without being seen? - the story unfolds realistically.I didn't put this on my BDSM shelf because it's not consensual. The text was very badly proofed and had a lot of typos.

The writing was just okay. Duncan is a footballer who is totally straight until he's abducted by a man, tied down and forced into some dirty depraved m/m sex. There is a little bit of kinky play with the restraints and pain through lotion. The abductor wasn't really a sadist since he only sexually torment Duncan and forced Duncan to orgasm. Duncan is horrified to experience pleasure at the hands, lips and dick of another man. He doth protest too much. I think the guy was too easy on Duncan. Should have sexually tortured him longer and really fucked him in the ass hard and brutal. This was a quick and easy read for anyone that just wants a bit of non-con m/m pseudo-rape.

lots of editing errors --- you're instead of your, etc. Story was pointless and sad. Not for me.

Well that was disturbing. And what should have been smoking hot just creeped me out. I guess that was the point. Still, I couldn't put it down so it must've been pretty compelling.

I wonder how many times Mr. Brighton shoots off his load in the middle of writing his porn books. His stories breathe libido from start to finish; it is impossible he does not ache for release at certain points. In the Dark is a dream-porn film translated into a story. Although I imagine this shall not be a cheap one as a movie if given a chance. I can see it portrayed by excellent actors with a very fine-looking Duncan. Production values are high and the cinematography is downright brilliant. A dream—that is all it is.This is a gay man's fantasy come true (at least in writing). A product of pure fantastical desire where imagination is the only limit. I shall not attempt to refute the author's claim in matters concerning heightened pleasure in the dark and absolute sexual surrender empowered by tactile pleasuring. However, I am not fully convinced it is true to all heterosexual males. It may be true to some but to others it may not.May I declare the third paragraph from the beginning is utter BS? Duncan's olfactory assault renders him unconscious and in stupor when he awakes but not in amnesia or PTSD. The author also tries to be clever in the ending by revealing a connection to Duncan's graded B essay. However, the revelation is obscure—an attempt to make readers think but a miserable one.Despite these little whinings, my body responded well with the pornographic narrative (I may have done a thing or two to my body in my soft cushiony cot). Sadly, the sexual stimulus is not enough. My heart yearns for emotional gratification as well—which none of the book offers. Perhaps if the author introduces Duncan as a douchebag, I may have contented myself with everything this dark erotic thriller offers.Nevertheless, Mr. Brighton successfully gives us great pornography in this tale. And, man, that cover photo—smoldering hot! Lewdly electrifying!

ab·duct (abˈdəkt/)(Verb) past tense: abducted; past participle: abducted1. take (someone) away illegally by force or deception; the dark, where reality and sexuality became blurred... Drawn by the cover.Curious by the blurb. That what make me choose this book.Kinda creepy, but can't denied myself that I 'enjoying' this reading.Beside, what do you expect from this kind of book anyway huh? This is pure PWP, you can't complain for the lack of good plot or even a story...Perhaps you can enjoy some kinky desire "in the dark" with Duncan...and his mysterious kidnapper ;)Well, at least we know who the mysterious kidnapper is....because Duncan finally got an A+ for his philosophy test! *grins*"But was it a dream? But what was real?"

Duncan, a student at Edinburgh University, wakes to find himself in a darkened room, naked and shackled, arms and legs spread wide; the last thing he remembers is going home after a night at the pub - and earlier the strange man who had followed him to the gents. But he is now helpless, and it seems at the mercy of that same man. What lay ahead of him is a night of sexual torture; for Duncan who is straight, it is torture enough that it is another man fondling his body, but that is nothing compared to what is to come; however he does know that he won't be released until he begs his abductor to take him completely, until he proves he really wants it. Until he does he will brought to the brink time and again, and will engage in practices he never imagined. In The Dark is a very well written, very erotic, but rather short story, with a subtle little twist at the end. The descriptions of Duncan's experiences, the sensations he enjoys, are among the best I have read.

In my opinion - this was nothing but rape! And a lame attempt to glorify it...It's such a short read, less than 50 pages, and yet i found myself repeatedly veering away from it every few sentences 'cos it was hard to think any of that as hot...especially the (view spoiler)[ gag-worthy deep throating! That was too much! (hide spoiler)]Reading the blurb and the extract i thought maybe there's more to the story and perhaps the "abduction" might lend itself to some steamy sex but it turned out to be rather disappointing, to say the least!

It was kind of hot, about being drugged and then raped by an older man. He woke up bound and then was teased constantly or left totally alone in the dark. His captor wanted him to beg for it, which in the end he did. He was then drugged again and returned home. Not a great story, but not bad either.

Too short, literaly a night, therefore there is no character or relationship development whatsoever. Good in the sense that when he's left alone in the dark he reflects upon reality nearing philosophical thoughts. However, nothing is deepened and therefore a disapointment.
